Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Chile

Prof. Rodrigo A. Gutiérrez (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) is research director at Faculty of Biological Sciences. He is deputy director of the Millennium Institute for Integrative Biology and principal investigator at the FONDAP Center for Genome Regulation. He is one of the founders of the Chilean Society of Plant Biologists and first elected president.
Pr. Gutiérrez was a pioneer in combining use of classical experimental biology, functional genomics and bioinformatics approaches to unravel molecular mechanisms of plant form and function. Since then, he successfully conducts systems biology approaches allowing to discover important molecular mechanisms plants utilize to respond to changes in nitrogen (N) nutrient availability using Arabidopsis as a model system. His holistic approach allowed connecting processes that have been classically studied independently (e.g. plant nutrition and circadian rhythms, plant nutrition and hormone signaling, plant nutrition and root development).
